Endodontics (root canal treatment)
A root canal treatment is necessary when there is damage to the nerve in the tooth. This may be due to deep caries, a dental crack or fracture, an infection, an overly extensive filling, etc. Root canal treatment consists in removing the nerve from the tooth. Next, the channel (s) are cleaned and sealed. If needed, antibiotics may be prescribed prior to treatment. Afterwards, the treated tooth becomes non-vital. As a result, it is much more fragile and more at risk of fracturing. This is why in most cases, it is recommended to protect the tooth with a crown.
Root canal treatment is usually done in one visit but it may happen that a second visit is necessary in order to complete the treatment. The success rate of a root canal treatment is very high. It is above the 95% mark. With good hygiene, the tooth treated with a root canal treatment can have a very long lifespan. However, a tooth that has had a root canal treatment can decay like other teeth. It is therefore important to maintain good oral hygiene practices.
Remember that an untreated infected tooth can cause serious oral health problems.
