Periodontics is not only an attack on the gums but also on the bone that supports the teeth.

Consequences of periodontics

  • Spaces between teeth are getting bigger
  • Bone loss
  • Loss of the gum papilla
  • Dental mobility
  • Shooting
  • Bad breath due to the proliferation of bacteria
  • Premature tooth loss

Untreated gingivitis can cause periodontitis.

Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation of the gums. It causes bleeding, tenderness, and redness. This gum disease is reversible. It is caused by the accumulation of bacteria that forms dental plaque between teeth and gums. Over time, dental plaque hardens and becomes tartar. With regular dental follow-up and good dental hygiene, gingivitis will be eliminated.

Uncontrolled gingivitis can damage the gums and bone around the teeth. This can cause bone loss around the teeth. Periodontics is therefore irreversible.

There are three phases of periodontics: beginning, moderate, and advanced.

Periodontics is affecting more and more people. Many of them don't even know they have it. This gum disease is initially silent and painless. However, as the disease progresses, the more significant the symptoms become.

With regular dental follow-ups, your gums will be evaluated accurately at each of your visits. If we have concerns about your gum condition, we recommend deep cleaning (surfacing/curettage) under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Afterwards, our dental hygienists will be able to follow up more closely in order to ensure good stability and to keep the teeth as long as possible.

The later periodontics is taken care of, the more difficult it becomes to treat it. In more advanced cases, surgery may be necessary to replace the gums and correct the bone level. Did you know that periodontics is the number one cause of adult tooth loss and that 9 out of 10 Canadians may have it?
